Hardcover Books are Smyth sewn, a chain lock stitch that sews
each section together and creates a flexible spine.
Endsheets and reinforcing tape are applied to the book prior
to casing-in. Endsheets can be white, made from colored paper or printed.
Headbands are a cloth strip applied to the top and bottom of the spine for a finished feel.
There are many options:
Cloth/Leather applied to board
Textured with Linen or Cambric Lamination
Clear Lamination in Matte or Gloss
Board options include 98 pt. or 120 pt. thicknesses, padded board, and board in various densities. Your estimator can assist you determine the appropriate board to use. Dust Jackets can be applied as well.
Saddle-Stitch binding is our most popular binding. Saddle-Stitch binding
is like catalogs, magazines and programs.
Signatures are collated into each other then stitched through the fold with staples.
Well known standard for art books and large coffee table books.
Smyth sewn works well for coated or uncoated papers.
HARD COVER CASE IN BOOKS
A Smyth Sewn book bound in cloth, leather or the like, over stiff material.
Soft cover or paperback books are made with an adhesive binding called "perfect binding."
Perfect binding is a cost-friendly manufacturing choice.
Perfect Binding Process Soft Cover:
1) Page sections are gathered
2) Spine is skived off
3) a thick covering of glue is applied
4) A paper cover is applied to the spine
5) Book is then trimmed to size in a one high speed process
Paper covers are printed on cover weight stock, and can be enhanced with a variety of special treatments. Lamination is highly recommended for paperback covers to protect them from scuffing.
Laminations are offered in a variety of flat and gloss finishes.
